FISH TANK

A scathing and ultra-realistic (is that redundant?) and gritty and tragic 'coming-of-age' film. it involves a 15 year old girl in England. so naturally the accents were thick as yorkshire puddin' and thank god, the movie was not heavy on long speeches because we missed whole sentences of dialogue though never felt lost because of the kind of movie it was.

The English accent reminded me of a fantastic SNL skit which was broadcast when Russell Brand was host. The skit involved a robbery movie filmed with British accents. Hilarious.

Evidently, the lead female role was played by a non-professional actress and you'd never know it. She is angry and alienated and has no relationship with her mother who is also angry and alienated. Mia, the daughter, develops this complicated and multi-layered relationship with her mom's boyfriend and this is the situation which leads to unbearable tension.

The photography was excellent; the music was great and there was lots of dancing in the film because that's how Mia found acceptance and approval.
